My mom was recently featured as a guest on the Clinician’s Roundtable podcast on ReachMD. The host, Dr. Matt Birnholz, interviewed her about why healthcare providers have such a hard time following their own advice.
He says:
“As healthcare professionals, we’re constantly offering our patients well-informed advice on how to prevent illness and lead healthier lives, from eating better to exercising more to sleeping on set schedules. [But] do we do any of these things ourselves? Why are we so bad at following our own advice?”
Can you relate?
Even if you’re not a healthcare provider, if you have a job that primarily serves others, are you practicing what you preach?
The overwhelming excuse for all of us is time. We don’t have time to exercise, eat well, reduce stress, or sleep. We take an oath to be all things to all people under all circumstances, especially as clinicians. So, meeting our own needs comes last. And since it’s a fast-paced lifestyle that we live, we often don’t have any time left for ourselves.
The other piece is that we’re never taught how to really take care of ourselves when we’re going through tough times. When life is going okay, we can get to the gym, and eat pretty healthy, but when we’re having to see a lot of extra patients, and stay late, and do EMR at home and maybe on weekends, how do we take care of ourselves in that context? That’s a whole other level of expertise we just don’t learn.
