What Is Intuitive Eating? And Is It Right For You?

From Dr. Mimi –

I’ve talked to you a lot lately about making small changes to impact your fitness, energy levels and overall health.

Small changes are easier to stick with, and adding one small change at a time will result in a MUCH healthier version of YOU! Drinking more water, for example, is one tiny change that we can all make to increase energy and cut out those sugary energy drinks.

Another small change we’ve discussed is finding a fitness goal that works for you. If you remember my interview with Nada Lena Nasserdeen, we talked about a woman who came to the gym every day for a solid month, and all she did was weigh herself and leave. But she had developed a HABIT of coming, and soon enough, she felt brave enough to begin working out.

Making changes to our eating habits, though. That’s often a bit trickier. We’ve talked about preventing hunger between meals. Often it’s as simple as making sure you have a protein source at each meal.

But, let’s pause for a moment on food. If we’re honest, some of us have a VERY complicated relationship with it, don’t we? It holds a lot of power over not only our health, but often our emotions and our sense of self-worth, too!

That’s why I want to talk to you about a style of eating that isn’t really a plan or a diet at all, but that works for many people.

It’s called Intuitive Eating.

So, what is intuitive eating?

It is what it sounds like, but like any approach to healthier eating, it’s not as simple as it sounds. And it isn’t for everyone. But if counting calories gives you anxiety OR if you are ready to shed your emotional attachment to food, intuitive eating could be a good fit for you!

Today, I want to share an article with you that I was privileged to contribute to in SHAPE magazine. In it, you’ll find answers to the question, “What is intuitive eating?” AND you’ll get help along your journey with the following guideposts:

  • Who should (and who shouldn’t) try intuitive eating
  • Common issues with intuitive eating
  • Troubleshooting intuitive eating problems
